Has anyone seen a place to get good information on the capabilities of AEM's EMS system? Their website isn't that insightful as compared to say Hondata's. The benefits for us OBD II folks seem to be:
- More "elegant" - no adapters, ECU swap and modification, etc. (Less install cost)
- Looks like it offers datalogging and tunability similar to say a Hondata 4b (cost about same between systems assuming OBD II).
What I can't figure out are the details on AEMs unit.
- Can you alter VTEC engagement
- How does it deal with different size injectors in altering maps
- Does it have high and low cam fuel and timing maps
- How is it that the AEM ECU can replace the stock OBD II ECU and keep all other functionalities - CELs, etc.
The downsides appear to be:
- Any bad answers to details above and others I have but this is long enough already
- Tuning time to offset install time as there are no base maps for a SC GSR (also see injector question above) as compared to a Hondata (there is a base map for a stock GSR, I just have no idea how much effort it would be for someone to start from "scratch" versus editing something close that already has boost built in)
- I haven't been able to get much detail or find anyone who has installed one
Just thought someone might have tried to do some research on the AEM unit and could point me in a direction (or if any of the Hondata folks who occasion the board might have some input
)

I tried calling AEM, but couldn't get past a salesperson, and they weren't helpful on the "functionality" beyond, "it's just plug and play, no problem." They referred me to a local dealer that they said had installed a few. I called the dealer, they said all they had was one in a box for sale and I could stop by and read the instructions if I wanted. I may just do that, but thought I'd float this out for response. Thought maybe someone that went to SEMA or is a dealer might also have some input.

We've had an engineer from AEM talking to us on the Supraforums board for a while now. I don't know anyone who's tuned it yet but from what he's been posting, it can do everything you asked about. It sounds like a killer unit and I'll have one if the claims are all true.

Mine should be here any day now. I've downloaded the demo software and it's pretty darn complete. I'm kind if intimidated by it to be completely honest.
A buddy of mine got his already for a JRSC Si running 10psi. He said the car wouldn't start with the base maps that came on the disk. AEM was very helpfull though and sent him a new one that fired the car right up.
You can do anything with the system. DSM injectors work just fine, all you have to do is tell it that you've got them. You can set your VTEC xover to anything you want. All the idle controls are there, you can change them based on coolant temp. If you have an auto trans, you can control the shift points based on both engine speed and throttle position. It has built in NOS control. You can use both fuel and ignition cut for your rev limiter. Heck, you can even swap a Viper motor in there and the ECU will run it (as long as you can figure how to mount the thing
).
If anyone's interested, download the demo software from AEMs website. It's pretty neat.

I figured others must be wondering the same things. Thanks for the info and keep it coming if you have more.
It sounds like it's "plug and play" compared to installing a Hondata on an OBD II car, but the offset is going to be how long it may take to build a boost map for the JRSC.
This is looking very interesting. I figured a Hondata 2b setup would be about $2,000 for the Hondata parts, injectors and dyno tuning time for an OBD II car, excluding any labor for actual install. The EMS looks around $1,800 for injectors, EMS and install, and the unknown is tuning time, but it looks more versatile/comparable to a Hondata 4b . Hondata looks a lot better if you're already OBD I or potentially the other add ons for full throttle shift, shift light, etc. that I'm not as interested in for a street car.

My AEM EMS died on me when I was trying to do a firmware update. Still waiting for AEM's reply. Someone told me about a recall on some of the units.
